5 Ways to Make Your Candles Last Longer

5 Ways to Make Your Candles Last Longer

Simple Candle Care Tips Every Candle Lover Should Know

By Nomusa, Founder of Nomdori

There's something wonderfully calming about lighting a candle.

For me, it's the moment the day begins to slow down. A cup of tea, a good book, soft lighting, and the gentle glow of a favourite fragrance can completely change the atmosphere of a room.

One of the questions I'm asked most often is:

"How can I make my candle last longer?"

The good news is that a few simple habits can dramatically improve the life of your candle while helping it burn more cleanly and beautifully. Here are my five favourite tips.

1. The First Burn Is the Most Important

If you only remember one thing from this guide, let it be this.

The first time you light your candle, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge of the jar before extinguishing it.

This usually takes between two and four hours, depending on the size of the candle.

Why?

Because wax has a "memory." If the first burn creates a small melt pool, your candle is more likely to tunnel during future burns, leaving wax around the edges that never melts.

A patient first burn rewards you with a much more even candle throughout its life.

2. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to around 5 mm.

It only takes a few seconds, but it helps:

Reduce soot.

Prevent large flames.

Encourage an even burn.

Extend the life of your candle.

A well-trimmed wick also allows you to enjoy the fragrance as it was intended.

3. Don't Burn Your Candle for Too Long

It can be tempting to leave a candle burning all evening, but longer isn't always better.

I recommend burning your candle up toĀ four hours maximum at a time.

After four hours, the wax can become too hot, which may affect fragrance performance and shorten the candle's life.

Allow it to cool completely before lighting it again.

4. Keep Your Candle Away from Draughts

A flickering flame might look beautiful, but it usually means your candle is sitting in a draught.

Air movement causes uneven burning and can create soot on the inside of the jar.

Try placing your candle on a stable surface away from open windows, fans and air vents for a cleaner, steadier burn.

5. Look After Your Candle Between Burns

Candle care doesn't stop once the flame is out.

Allow the wax to cool before moving the candle, and keep the surface free from dust, wick trimmings and debris.

Storing your candle in a cool, dry place also helps preserve its fragrance for longer.
